$5 or $500? Same Trade, Same Pips, Totally Different Ending 📊
Beginner Guide | September 25, 2026 | Source: Followme Academy

Two people open EUR/USD at the same price on the same day, close it out 50 pips later in profit. One makes five dollars. The other makes five hundred. The setups were identical, the analysis was identical. The only thing that changed was lot size, a number a lot of beginners never actually sit down and calculate.
At the smallest size, that 50-pip win is basically nothing, which is fine, that's usually where people should be while they're still learning. Scale it up to a full lot and the exact same trade turns into real money, but the reverse is just as true if the market goes the other way.
There's also a catch most people run into once they leave EUR/USD: a pip isn't defined the same way everywhere. On USD/JPY it sits two decimal places earlier and is worth noticeably less. Gold takes it further, each pip barely moves on its own, but the price can swing hundreds of pips in a day, so a stop loss sized the EUR/USD way can end up way too tight or way too loose.
The way around all this is one simple calculation: figure out how much you're willing to lose, divide that by your stop loss distance in pips, and that tells you the right lot size. Most traders skip it and just guess.
